Anxiety Counseling

Anxiety Counseling in Buffalo, NY

The intricacies of our emotional and psychological well-being can be frustrating. A neurotypical person with good mental health will find it easier to lead a happy and healthy life. Good mental health helps us cope with life’s adversities and find meaning among the muck.

However, mental health issues are pervasive throughout the United States. One in five American adults experience at least one bout of mental illness each year, and one of the most common mental health issues is anxiety.

The Help You Need is Here

Unfortunately, treating anxiety doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all answer.
When you work with an experienced and compassionate Harris Hill counselor, you will take a crucial step toward finding the root cause of your anxiety and developing coping mechanisms so you can live each day of your life in control of your anxiety.

Some clients experienced a specific trauma that is responsible for their anxiety. When trauma is the trigger, this is generally caused by the brain becoming stuck in a state where it is obsessively assessing every environment for threats; the mind can even begin to see threats where there are none. Our Buffalo anxiety counselors give you tools to handle these issues.

Understanding Different Anxiety Disorders

People can use the term anxiety loosely, but it is actually an umbrella term for several different types of disorders. The most common are:

  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common anxiety disorders and is characterized by persistent and debilitating feelings of stress, nervousness, and fear. Regular everyday anxiety, like being nervous before speaking at a public event, is a normal stress response and not GAD. An anxiety disorder causes a person to become obsessively worried about things far out of their control to the point where they may cease functioning in day-to-day life.

Individuals with GAD feel very nervous about every aspect of their day. They may think fatalistically, believing the world won’t ever work in their favor. This constant worrying can take precedence over people with GAD’s everyday tasks and chores. GAD affects about 3 percent of Americans every year.

You don’t have to know the specific type of anxiety disorder you’re suffering from when you contact Harris Hill Counseling. Your therapist will thoroughly assess you to give you a specific diagnosis.

We Are One of Western New York’s Premier Anxiety Treatment Centers

At Harris Hill Counseling, we pave a unique path for each of our clients. When handling anxiety, there isn’t one specific treatment plan that works for everyone. That’s why we treat you as a whole person – not just an anxiety disorder. Some facets of your treatment plan may include teaching you how to take care of your emotional well-being, helping you identify and eliminate substances that increase anxiety (like caffeine and alcohol), family counseling, and one-on-one counseling.
